shady characters

The megatalented Jared Deal invted me to be a part of this incredible show in Brooklyn. Here’s what Cartoon Brew said about the event recently…

“Shady Characters” is an art show that opens Friday, July 28th, at the ‘Live with Animals’ Gallery (210 Kent Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11211; entrance to the gallery on Metropolitan). Opening reception is from 6-9pm. The show, curated by Jared Deal, is “simply a tribute to all of the creepers and tweakers, outcasts and outlaws, and freaks and geeks, we encounter daily.” Participating artists include Deanna Marsigliese, Clio Chiang, Steve Lambe, Gabe Swarr, Rex Hackelberg, Anna Chambers, Mark Ackland, Todd Kauffman, Joel Trussell, Bobby Chiu, Martin Wittig, Aaron Augenblick, Phil Rynda, Peter Browngardt, Danny Kimanyen, Randy Ramos, Garnet Syberg-Olsen, Jamie Mason, Chris George, Eric Nocella, Dino Alberto, Jason Levesque, Tim Shankweiler, Eric Brown, Mark Pecoraro, Pat Pakula, Kevin Schmid, Kaori Hamura, Richard Mather, Rod Filbrandt, and Deal himself. Stay tuned to Jared’s blog for additional details.

I ended up doing an acyrlic piece which is always the most difficult for me. There’s some terrible tangents that formed and there’s some things I still feel weird about but it’s done and on its way.

    Thanks a stack, everybuddy.

Todd- You’s crazy. I’m only trying to keep up with you, man. You’re too far ahead of me!

Jared- Cool! Glad you like it. Hope it goes over well with the Shady crowd.

Dagan- Thanks, man. Glad to hear you’ll make the show. Wish I could be there to meet you!

Mega- It’s just a 20 x 16 canvas I picked up. I should do the wood thing more often. Hell I should paint more often while I’m at it. Unfortunately I won’t be able to make the show. Just skipped over to your blog and saw your stuff for the show. Strictly DOPE… as always.

Chris- Har! Glad you like ‘em, sir. I’m super honored you stopped by my humble dumpster here.

DB- You’re too good of a subject. When I think shady I think Darin. heh

George- Thanks much! Just cuz you’re shady doesn’t mean you can’t like Billy Joel or Sprite in my opinion. Have fun this weekend.

Gene- Man, you’re way too generous. I feel like I stumbled through it more than I rocked it. Glad you dig it!

Kevin- Thanks, sir! Your piece is amazing! Wish I could see it in person.

The painting makes for a good wallpaper. Did you check out Avatar: The Last Airbender yet? They just did a mid-Summer break two parter to break up (puns are great)the monotony of no good shows being shown during the Summer. I think they are gonna release the first 20 or so eps in a box set on DVD come September.

toliverchap- I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet but I’m gonna get on it. Glad the painting made your desktop, good sir. I’m flattered.

thorny- Shucks, thanks! You Neptoon fellers keep me inspired something terrible. If you’re headed to Ottawa for the Animation fest I may get a chance to meet ya!

paublo- Are you going to the show? It’s priced to move! heh. Thanks, bruddah.

thorsten- I’m nowhere near your level of painting, man, but I took your advice to heart. Thanks for the tip and the compliments!

Sorry, Joel. But I linked your ‘Shady characters’ to my blog. I’m initiate in blogger, and lately my pastime has been to click on navbar ‘next blog’. (And sorry my bad english, I’m brazilian.)

Great characters and I’m diggn’ the treatment.

  • Jul 20,
    2006

ridd- Sir, you’re way too kind. Thanks, man!

mark- Sprite seemed so appropriate for that guy for some reason, you know? I would’ve loved to give him a “bahamas” t-shirt too, but it seemed like overkill. Glad you like it.

cicero- Thanks a million, Mr. Brazilian.

dominic- Hey man! Thanks so much. I totally recognize your work from the ol Drawing Board… DJ Bug right? Nice blogging action there, sir.

Sir Swarr- Thanks for the compliment. You’re a man of mighty mighty talent. Maybe one day I can squeeze in on some LA art shows!

Lemmie just say, your painting in the Shady Characters show had me and my friends in stitches for quite a while. The genius is all in the details!!

  • Jul 20,

dude this is soooo funny the bald short guy reminds me of this creep in a Steven Seagal film. I think he bust him up in a bar pretty bad!

  • Jul 20,
    2006

oh ya this might sound dumb but how did you manage to get that painting done in Acrylics? Acrylics drys faster than crazy glue… am I missing something here… something embarrassing obvious?

  • Jul 20,
    2006

Justin- Glad to hear you liked the piece despite seeing all its up close sloppiness. Wish I coulda been there!

Sir Hobo- I’m gonna have to rent some Seagal now and find this scallywag. I’m sure it’s one I’ve seen before and stored in my subconcious for such a fitting occasion.

The acrylic thing was just done as a slow build up from faint washes to more opaque application. Actually not even that planned out really. Much more of a desperate sprint to the deadline. You’re totally right about acrylics being a major ass pain. I’ve got a real knack for sabotaging my own efforts with as many obstacles as possible.

Thanks for swinging by the dumpster, goodgents.

  • Jul 20,

so…uh…when’s the next post mister busy pants? still lovin’ this piece, but, please? I need some freshly squeezed Trussell…wait, that sounded bad. Anyway…hope that the lack of posting is due to much busyness on your end…kiss kiss.

I can’t believe the amount of talent in this comment thread. Pressure’s on knowing you guys might drop by!

roque- Thanks a ton, man. Very honored you can look beyond the tangents, good sir! Heh. Big fan of all your fine work.

rex- If only my hands were as powerful with the brush as yours. Curses! You give me something to aspire to, Lord Rex.

Gene- Ok, so now I feel all guilty. Life’s been kicking my ass this month with everything it’s got. I’m working on the floor of my 9 month old’s room on my old PC from SI. That’s the tip of the iceberg, but that’s enough in itself. Sheesh. Wish I was up in Northgate and we could brew down. Oh well. Work’s good so I can’t moan too much, eh?
